Welcome to SY2021 - A Message from the SWWHS LSAT

August 29, 2020

Hello to all of our families at Walls and a quick update from the Local School Advisory Team (LSAT).

In spite of the distance and strain this pandemic has brought to our lives, our school community has continued to learn and adapt. We recognize this has not been, easy, comfortable, or fair. However, our LSAT Board is making strides in areas that directly impact our school community.

Last school year, our board of committed parents and engaged teachers have collaborated with administration to restore our school budget after suffering steep cuts. We monitored the growing impact of Covid-19 in our students and teachers, in our virtual-classrooms and building, and in the larger DC community as we championed health equity for when we re-open.

The LSAT also moved quickly to address the hurt and isolation that many students, teachers, and parents experience at our school. While we have been watching events unfold nationally, the Sub-Committee on Racial Dialogue was formed. Here the previous evaluations and recommendations made by the school's Culture and Climate committee were heard, understood, and implemented. We embrace this journey of a more perfect union in our school community.

This school year the LSAT will continue to collaborate with administration and advocate for these on-going concerns of budget, Covid-19, and school culture. To do this we need your help in all of it. Never underestimate the power of the positive impact parents have on their child's success.

We are committed to you by engaging our families more fully, so please look out for emails and notices in the Penguin Nation.

You can learn more about us here and we invite you to attend our first meeting. on Wednesday September 2 @ 5:30pm.
