Dress Code Philosophy
“School Without Walls High School’s student dress code supports equitable educational access and is written in a manner that does not reinforce stereotypes.” The Principal has agreed to implement the student recommend Reformed Dress Code. “To ensure effective and equitable enforcement of this dress code, school staff/administration shall enforce the dress code in a manner that does not reinforce or increase marginalization or oppression of any group based on race, sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, cultural observance, household income or body type/size. School Without Walls High School expects students to dress in a way that is appropriate for the school day or school sponsored event.”
Dress Regulation
Students must wear a complete and appropriate top that does not expose entire abdominal area or entire back. Tops consisting of any inappropriate language or imagery such as drug reference, violence, sexual activity, or anything offensive based on race, sex, religion, origin, ethnicity, sexuality, or any other personal defining characteristic are strictly prohibited.
Examples of What Students Can Wear
T-Shirts
Long -sleeve shirts and cardigans
Sweaters/Sweatshirts/Turtlenecks
Spaghetti Straps
Muscle Tees
V-Necks
Slightly Cropped Tops
Strapless Tops and Dresses that do not excessively expose chest region
Examples of what students can NOT wear:
Bras/Bralettes may not be worn as a shirt
Tops that expose entire back
Tops that excessively expose chest region
Sheer tops without dress code complying clothing accompanying them
Halter sleeveless bodysuits without dress code complying clothing accompanying them
Any clothing considered offensive or containing inappropriate content
Students must wear a complete and appropriate bottom that does not expose underwear or private regions. Bottoms consisting of any language or imagery such as drug reference, violence, sexual activity, anything offensive based on race, sex, religion, ethnicity sexuality, or any other personal defining characteristic are strictly prohibited.
Examples of what students can wear:
Jeans with holes and rips
Shorts that do not expose posterior or underwear
Leggings
Skirts
Hoodie Sweatshirts
Examples of what students can Not Wear:
Shorts that expose posterior and/underwear (daisy dukes, hot pants, short shorts, etc.)
Visibly sagging pants (underwear exposed)
Clothing can NOT be offensive:
No offensive language/profanity
No words or imagery of drugs or alcohol
No hate speech or offensive language toward specific personal characteristics, or based on any protected class
No sexual content/pornography
Administration will enforce the dress code pursuant to The DCMR Chapter B24 (Student Rights and Responsibilities) and B2408.1 (Dress Codes/Uniforms)
