SWWHSA Statement to DME Regarding Ellington Field Transfer

SWWHS athletic teams have had a long-standing issue with securing stable use of fields.

The Mayor has directed the Deputy Mayor for Education (DME) to transfer ownership and management of Duke Ellington Field from DC Public Schools to DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR).

  • See letter from DPR describing public comment period through February 12, 2020).

  • See letter from SWWHSA to SWW community requesting support for Elling Field advocacy.

SWW parents representing various field sports attended the DPR community meeting on January 15 regarding the transfer of Duke Ellington Field from DCPS to DPR.

The SWWHSA submitted a formal letter to the DME and DPR recognizing that while Ellington Field, (if renovated for safety and function) can potentially accommodate up to 3 SWW field sports, it does not fully meet the needs of the 22 SWW competitive teams that currently do not have regular field or court space.

  • See SWWHSA letter to DME and DPR addressing need for a comprehensive field and court solution.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed time and effort in support of out student athletes.
