A Message of Unity - by Avajane Lei

On November 3, the SWWHS community got together for a virtual ‘toast’ to celebrate the end of a tough election season. We were moved by Avajane Lei’s (Class of 2024) words of unity.

Yesterday (election day), I went to visit the 231,003 white flags that represented the Americans lost to COVID-19. At the display, there was a sign with this question; “In America, How could this happen..” and I asked myself that question.

How could so many lives be lost in a country that is supposed to be one of the most advanced in the world? My answer to that is the divide that has come with our administration. Our communities, our cities, and the people of our country are divided. Because of this, people no longer listen to science. We have to make it heard that black lives matter when they should in the first place. With this election comes so much fear of violence, destruction, and chaos. When you walk down the street, you see shops boarded up, and there are fewer people on the streets.

So something I hope for this country in the next four years is unity. I hope the American people will be able to unite as one to get through these times of the pandemic and civil unrest to help create a better country not only for my generation but for the future ones to come.
