SWWHS Statement on the Events in Atlanta, GA
March 18, 2021
School Without Walls High School Community,
Earlier this week, our country witnessed an unspeakable tragedy when a lone gunman shot and killed eight people at three different spas in the Atlanta, GA area. These shootings have sparked a sense of outrage and fear in not only the Asian American community but throughout our entire nation. As a school, we hurt with the families and loved ones of those affected. We must continue to stand up and speak up when we are faced with any signs of hate, discrimination, or racism.
In the coming days and weeks, as our school staff and faculty continue to expand our conversation on race and equity, we are asking teachers to provide students the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings surrounding not only these events, but all events that negatively affect our communities. DC Public Schools and School Without Walls are both working to create an academic atmosphere that is safe and equitable for all students.
For students and families in our community of Asian descent, please know that we stand with you and are here to support to you. In the words of Atlanta, GA mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, “A crime against any community is a crime against us all.”
We hope that you take this time to reflect and dialogue with not only our school community but also with your families and friends. The only way we can make positive changes in our society is to dialogue and to take action against any forms of injustice.
Thank you and please continue to stay safe.
Regards,
SWW Administration
